KIEV, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian police detained 26 demonstrators for clashing with police officers in the mass riots during the weekend, the Interior Ministry said Tuesday.
"Some representatives of the radical youth committed criminal offenses. They inflicted injuries to police officers, using sticks, stones and firebombs," the ministry said in a report.
Since Sunday afternoon, some 164 police officers have been injured in the clashes, 80 of them taken to hospitals, the report said.
More than 100 demonstrators were also hurt during the violence on Sunday and early Monday, according to Kiev city health department.
The rallies, which began in November to back Ukraine's European integration, sparked back to life on Sunday as people gathered in central Kiev to protest against a legislation which bans the wearing of masks and helmets during protests and allows a jail term of up to five years for those who block public buildings.
After the weekend rally turned violent, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Monday called for dialogue and compromise to peacefully end the massive protests, which have been largely peaceful in the past two months.
