Embargo strands Syrian airplane for Geneva talks at Athens airport

ATHENS, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- A Syrian airplane carrying an official delegation to Geneva for Wednesday's peace talks aiming to reach a diplomatic solution to the three-year conflict was stranded in Athens International Airport on Tuesday noon.

The plane was unable to refuel due to the embargo against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government, according to local media reports.

British and American firms which refuel aircrafts landing at "Eleftherios Venizelos" airport denied to refuel the Tupolev 134 with a total of 26 persons on board, including the Syrian foreign minister and other diplomats, due to the embargo, according to sources.

Airport officials did not confirm neither denied the reports speaking to Xinhua, however according to Foreign Ministry sources talks are under way so that the plane will be refueled by a Greek company and continue its trip to Switzerland.
