BRUSSELS, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- European Union (EU) Commissioner Michel Barnier on Monday called for policies to improve long-term competitiveness of the EU retail sector.
Addressing the inaugural meeting of the high-level group on retail competitiveness, Barnier said the competitiveness of the sector was crucial for European growth and jobs.
"The retail and wholesale services sector represents 11 percent of European GDP. Commerce accounts for almost 15 percent of European employment. This means almost 30 million European jobs," he said.
The high-level will advise the Commission on retail policy, building on the recommendations of the European Retail Action Plan adopted by the Commission in January 2013.
The action plan set out a strategy to facilitate consumer decisions, improve access to retail services, promote fairer and sustainable trading relationships as well as innovation and create a better working environment.
