NEW DELHI, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- India's Nehru-Gandhi scion Rahul Gandhi will not run for the post of prime minister as the ruling Congress party's candidate in the upcoming general elections, the party said Thursday.
"Sonia Gandhi has taken a decision that Rahul Gandhi will not be the party's prime ministerial candidate. He will, however, lead the poll campaign," the party spokesperson Janardan Dwivedi told the media.
The latest announcement came just hours after Indian Road Transport Minister Oscar Fernandes said that Rahul Gandhi was Congress party's natural choice for prime ministerial candidate.
It also put to rest speculation about the Congress party planning to nominate Rahul Gandhi as the prime ministerial candidate at a meeting in the national capital Friday.
