NEW DELHI, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Indian police Wednesday claimed to have identified all the eight suspects who allegedly robbed and gangraped at knife point a 51-year-old Danish woman tourist in the Indian capital Delhi late Tuesday evening after she lost her way near her hotel.
"We have identified all the eight accused after detaining 15 people in the case. The accused are mainly local criminals. A case of gangrape has been registered on basis of a complaint by the victim who refused to undergo a medical examination and flew out of this country this morning," a senior police official said.
In fact, in her complaint to the police, the Danish woman claimed that she had approached the accused when she lost her way back to her hotel near the main railway station at around 5 p.m. ( local time) Tuesday, after visiting a museum.
The accused misled her and took her to a secluded spot where they first robbed and then gangraped her at knife point for nearly three hours, before she managed to take an auto-rickshaw and reached her hotel and narrated her ordeal to its manager who, in turn, informed the police, according to the complaint.
Local TV channnels reported that the Danish woman, whose name has not been disclosed, arrived in Delhi on Tuesday, after visiting the Taj Mahal in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh's Agra town.
The Danish Embassy has urged the Delhi Police to take swift action in the case, the reports said.
The latest incident has again raised question about the safety in India for women tourists even as the government brought in stricter laws to punish sexual offenders in the wake of massive protests following the brutal and fatal gangrape of a 23-year-old medical student by six men on a moving bus in 2012 in Delhi.
This case came just weeks after a Polish woman was allegedly raped by a taxi driver while travelling with her two-year-old daughter to the Indian capital and less than a year after a Swiss woman was gangraped by a group of men while she was touring the central state of Madhya Pradesh, along with her husband.
