GAZA, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian was killed Wednesday morning in an Israeli air strike in eastern Gaza City, Hamas official and witnesses said.
An Israeli missile, apparently fired from a drone, hit and killed the Palestinian on the spot, according to witnesses.
Health ministry spokesperson of the Hamas authority, Ashraf Al- Qedra, identified the dead as Mohammed Al-Ejla, 32.
Sources told Xinhua that the Israeli air strike targeted an Islamic Jihad militant. It was unclear if he was carrying out military activities when he was hit.
Israeli tanks positioned behind the border fence separating Gaza and Israel fired shells on the area later. The tank shells also seriously wounded a nine-year-old boy, said Qedra.
Israeli strikes killed 12 Palestinians and wounded up to 150 others in the Gaza Strip through 2013, Qedra added.
Palestinian factions in Gaza, led by Islamic Hamas movement, held a fragile ceasefire with Israel. However, tit-for-tat attacks were frequently reported near the volatile fence.
