THE HAGUE, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- A total of 65 people have been arrested in the Dutch village of Veen after a group of youths turned against the fire brigade and police officers on Monday night.
Local police said Tuesday that they and firefighters came to the village in the province of North-Brabant after receiving reports that a car was on fire during pre-New Year's Eve festivities.
But a group of boys and girls made it impossible to extinguish the fire. They threw bottles and fireworks at the police, smashing a window of a police vehicle.
The police intervened and arrested eight youngsters, while the rest ran into a bar. Police officers then circled the area and called for reinforcement.
The youngsters were taken out of the bar one by one and taken in police vans to local detention facilities.
Veen is a trouble hotspot during the New Year celebrations and setting cars on fire has become somewhat of a tradition.
