GAZA, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Israeli airplanes carried out multiple strikes in several parts of the Gaza Strip Thursday hours after Israel said a rocket fired from Gaza landed on its territories.
Witnesses said that F16 jets dropped three bombs on an open space in north Gaza City and a militant training site in south Gaza.
Medical sources said the first airstrike hurt a civilian with minor injuries. The air strikes came after militants fired a rocket into northern Israel's coastal city of Ashkelon. Israeli media reports said the rocket landed on an open land and caused no damage or casualties.
Gaza-Israel borders have been tense since a sniper from Gaza shot dead an Israeli worker repairing the fence in eastern Gaza city Tuesday. Israel responded by air and artillery strikes, killing a 4-year-old Palestinian girl.
Hamas, the Islamic militant group controlling Gaza, said it was in contact with Egypt to reinforce a shaky ceasefire with Israel, which has held for more than a year.
