Death toll of school blast in Syria's Homs rises to 20

DAMASCUS, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- The death toll of the blast which went off earlier on Sunday near an elementary school in Syria's central province of Homs rose to 20, state media said.

The blast was carried out by a suicide bomber that detonated his explosive-laden truck at a compound that groups a number of schools in Um al-Amed area in the eastern countryside of Homs, the official SANA news agency quoted a military source as saying.

It said most of the killed were students and teachers, adding the blast also left a big crater and destroyed many houses in its surrounding.

The east of Homs has re-emerged as a hotspot with renewed clashes between government troops and jihadist-linked groups.

Several schools in Syria have been attacked by mortars and bombs and many students lost their lives as a result of the violence. The last incident took place in November when five schoolchildren were killed by a mortar shell that struck their mini bus in the capital Damascus.

Many Syrians have stopped sending their kids to schools out of fears of similar attacks, especially those in areas suffering daily mortar shelling by the rebels from hotspots near Damascus.


Lebanon pins hope in Geneva II conference on Syria

BEIRUT, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon's caretaker Foreign Affiars Minister Adnan Mansour revealed Friday that some factions are working on obstructing holding the Geneva II international talks aimed at finding a solution to the Syrian crisis.

Mansour said at the opening ceremony of the Association of Local Economic Development Agency of Beirut Southern Suburbs " information obtained point out to this direction." Full story

EU reiterates political solution to crisis in Syria

BEIRUT, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chairman of the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee Elmar Brok wished Saturday the Geneva 2 Conference success "despite weak and limited hope," to find a solution to the crisis in Syria, which will also benefit Lebanon, which suffered the overflow of displaced Syrians. Violence intensifies in Syria as peace talks postponed

DAMASCUS, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Explosions and mortar attacks intensified on Wednesday in the unrest-torn country, leaving tens of people killed and wounded, a day after the long-awaited peace conference on Syria was postponed due to the division among the exiled Syrian opposition groups.

As many as 25 mortar shells slammed into several districts of the capital Damascus on Wednesday and a deadly car bomb left tens of people killed and wounded in the southern province of Sweida, according to local media reports. The media said the rebels were behind the attacks.  Full story
