OSAKA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Local police in the western Japanese prefecture of Kyoto has launched a murder investigation following Thursday morning's deadly shooting of the head of Japan's major foodservice company running restaurant chains in Japan and China, local media reported.

The shooting incident occurred at around at around 7:00 a.m. local time, when Takayuki Ohigashi, 72, who was serving as President and Representative Director in Ohosho Food Service Corp., was gunned down by an unknown attacker on a road near the company' s head office building in eastern Kyoto City of the prefecture, according to the reports including one by the daily Mainichi Shimbun.

The reports said that he was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital where the company president was then officially confirmed dead.

The reports cited police officials as saying that Ohigashi was shot multiple times in the chest and stomach when he was leaving his car on the street where the police investigators have found cartridge cases.
