NEW DELHI, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- The United States has apologized for arresting an Indian woman diplomat in New York last sweek, which has triggered a diplomatic row between New Delhi and Washington, said local TV channel CNN-IBN Thursday.
The United States Secretary of State John Kerry spoke to Indian National Security Advisor Shavshankar Menon over the issue, while Indian Foreign Secretary Sujata Singh has also talked to U.S.Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman which was deemed positive, said the TV channel.
The arrest and alleged ill-treatment of an Indian woman diplomat in New York last week has escalated into a major diplomatic row between India and the U.S., with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday terming it as "deplorable'. Devyani Khobragade, the deputy consul general in New York, was arrested, handcuffed in public and subsequently strip-searched in custody by authorities in the U.S. last Thursday on charges of visa fraud and underpaying her Indian maid. The 39-year-old mother of two, who was later released on bail, has denied the charges.
