NEW DELHI, Dec. 12, (Xinhua) -- Seven people, mostly tribals, were kidnapped by armed left-wing rebels from two villages in the eastern Indian state of Orissa Thursday, said police.
The kidnapping took place at Kalimela area of Orissa's Malkangiri district. All the kidnapped are believed to be village officials or their relatives.
The rebels also had kidnapped three people on Dec. 4. One of them escaped the next day, while the other two were released on Dec. 7.
The rebels, also known as Maoists or Naxalites, are active in Orissa and commit attacks, kidnapping and murders from time to time against government officials, villagers and policemen, mainly in poor rural areas.
