IAEA experts visit Iran's Arak reactor

TEHRAN, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- A team of inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visited Iran's Arak heavy water reactor on Sunday, local media reported.

Two of the IAEA inspectors, who arrived in Tehran on Saturday, started their inspection to Arak reactor on Sunday, the spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Behrouz Kamalvandi, told semi-official ISNA news agency.

"Their inspection is underway and will be completed this evening," said Kamalvandi, adding that the inspectors will be back to Vienna on Sunday night.

The IAEA inspection to Gachin mine also will be discussed in the upcoming meeting between Iran and the IAEA in Vienna.

According to an agreement between Iran and the IAEA on Nov. 11, Iran allowed the UN nuclear watchdog's inspectors to visit central Arak heavy water plant and Gachin yellow cake mine in southern Iran.

On Saturday, Kamalvandi said that the AEOI has provided the UN nuclear agency with information about the country's new generation of centrifuges.

"The AEOI has provided the agency with necessary information about the research being carried out on the country's peaceful ( nuclear) activities on time and within the framework of the Safeguards Agreement," Kamalvandi was quoted as saying by Press TV.

The new generation of centrifuges has more capacity compared to the first and second generations, and have undergone initial tests, he said.

The Iranian official said the new generation was produced to enhance enrichment machinery and increase production capacity.

Iran's Arak facility produces heavy water for a nearby research reactor still under construction where Iran says it plans to make medical isotopes, though other nations, such as Israel, suspect that it may be able to produce weapons-grade plutonium.

IAEA inspectors arrive in Tehran for Arak reactor visit

TEHRAN, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- A team of inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) arrived here on Saturday to visit Iran's Arak heavy water reactor, the state IRIB TV reported.

Under a Framework for Cooperation with Iran, signed on Nov. 11 in Tehran, Iran and the Agency agreed "to strengthen their cooperation and dialogue aimed at ensuring the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program through the resolution of all outstanding issues," IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said earlier.  Full story
