Storm Xaver damages electricity in northern Czech Republic

PRAGUE, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Strong winds and snowfall caused by windstorm Xaver on Thursday night damaged electricity supply in northern Czech Republic, affecting tens of thousands of people.

The areas of eastern Bohemia, Cheb and Decinsko were most affected, where fallen trees and branches broke electricity lines, state-controlled power utility company CEZ spokesman Ladislav Kriz said on Friday.

So far power supply remains unavailable as the wind is still strong, said Kriz, adding that all the CEZ emergency teams have been mobilized to renew power supply as soon as possible.

Czech meteorologists warned that the danger would remain high until Saturday noon in the northern part of the nation, where wind speed in mountain areas could reach up to 108 km per hour.

On Thursday, windstorm Xaver battered Britain, Scandinavia and northern Germany with about four people killed.

Rail, ship and air services were partially closed down in northern Europe and anti-flood barriers were built on the coasts in fear of high waves.
