Indonesian president urges WTO members to open market for poor countries

BALI, Indonesia, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono appealed here on Tuesday that members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) should open their market wider to support the development of the poor countries.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 9th WTO ministerial conference kicked off Tuesday afternoon in the Indonesian resort island of Bali, Yudhoyono said giving the least develop countries an opportunity to trade gives them an opportunity to develop.

"Despite our progress, 1.2 billion people continue to live in extreme poverty," the president said.

A rules-based multilateral trading system works for developing countries is needed, he added, pointing out that helping the weak grow strong will bring benefits too and it will contribute to regional and global stability.

The three-day WTO ministers' meeting, struggling to revive the long-stalled Doha Round by reaching a possible trade deal, was attended by trade chiefs of the organization's 159 members and other 10,000 diplomats from more than 160 countries and regions.
