GAZA, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Islamic Hamas movement in Gaza recently appointed a female English spokeswoman for the first time. Israa' al-Mudallal, a 23-year-old woman from Gaza, speaks fluent English and lived several years in Britain.
She introduced herself as a Palestinian refugee. "Right now I live in Rafah refugee camp in southern Gaza Strip," she told Xinhua. She also said the reason she became the spokeswoman for Hamas is that she had a good experience in communicating with the public. " I know about the messages that can be sent to world in regards to our Palestinian cause and culture. The years I spent in Britain helped me to understand the mentality and the culture of the west, " she said.
Al-Mudallah said she spends most of the time keeping track of what the western media is reporting on the Palestinian cause. She is also planning to study Hebrew in order to follow what the Israeli media writes on the internet.
She admits the job is not easy, "because I become a spokeswoman in a certain sensitive period of time, when the Gaza Strip is passing through hard conditions." Al-Mudallal denied that there were strict or hard terms imposed on her by Hamas government, "my mission is to speak loudly and address a humanitarian speech to the world." Ihab al-Ghussein, head of Hamas government press office and the Arabic language spokesman, told Xinhua that this assignation is " to give women their rights in our society."
On the other hand, "assigning Israa as a spokesman in English language is aiming at being more open to the West and be able to communicate with the entire world because this would serve our legitimate cause," said al-Ghussein.
