New Jersey mall gunman commits suicide

English.news.cn   2013-11-06 15:56:07

BEIJING, Nov. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- A 20-year-old gunman who set off a night chaos in New Jersey mall was found dead early Tuesday morning after he shot himself, authorities said.

There are no other casualty reports in the incident.

The gunman dressed all in black opened fire inside a popular mall in New Jersey on Monday night just before closing time.

Richard Shoop, the gunman, fired at least 6 bullets in the shopping center.

Shots hit the ceiling, an escalator, an elevator and a storefront, according to Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli.

"He had more than enough opportunity to be able to shoot other people," Molinelli said. "Instead, he shot randomly at different locations."

"We know that his intent was either suicide or to do something that would cause police to shoot him, which we call 'suicide by cop,' ", said Molinelli.

The reason for the shooting incident still remains unclear.

"We're not sure exactly what caused him to do this, and we're all devastated," said, Kevin Shoop, Richard's brother.

"My brother intended to harm nobody else but himself. He just, sadly, decided to make an act of self-indulgence by taking his own life publicly. And it's a tragedy to us all," he added.
