YANGON, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar President U Thein Sein vowed Thursday that his country will join all member states and peoples of the United Nations to support the organization in taking up challenges in the implementation of its Millennium Development Goals (MDG) by 2015 and even beyond.
U Thein Sein made the pledge in his message on the occasion of celebrating the 68th anniversary of UN Day.
"While progress has been achieved in implementing these goals, new challenges are also emerging with time and under changing circumstances," he pointed out, stressing the need for the UN to be responsive to these challenges in the future and be better positioned to meet these expectations.
Underlining that the historic implementation of the UN MDGs help saves millions of the poor from severe poverty, he, however, emphasized the need to continue and intensify the development efforts beyond 2015 through sustainable development.
He called for redoubling efforts in disaster-risk reduction and preparedness for disaster to deter adverse consequences for development.
He also called for closer attention to mitigating the impact of climate change, education for women and health for children.
Thanking the UN for its unwavering support to Myanmar's political and socio-economic reforms, U Thein Sein reaffirmed the country's commitment and support to the international organization in its quest for more prosperous and peaceful world.
