TEHRAN, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Iranian and Russian Air Force commanders met in the Iranian capital Tehran to exchange views on ways of expanding Tehran-Moscow cooperation in military and defense sectors, Press TV reported on Sunday.
In their meeting here on Sunday, the commander of Iran Air Force Brigadier General Hassan Shahsafi and Russia's Air Force Commander in Chief Lieutenant General Viktor Bondarev discussed relevant areas of interest between the two countries.
Bondarev's talks with Shahsafi mainly focused on the exchange of information about pilot training, according to the report.
On Sunday, a senior Iranian commander said Tehran and Moscow want to find a solution to their dispute regarding the delivery of Russian-made S-300 missile systems to the Islamic republic.
"Iranian and Russian defense ministries are pursuing the case of the S-300 missile systems and have reached good and positive points," Commander of Iran's Khatam al-Anbia Air Defense Base Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili was quoted as saying by Press TV.
He made the remarks following a meeting with Bondarev who arrived in Tehran earlier in the day for an official four-day visit at the invitation of Shahsafi.
"The S-300 missile system is completely a defensive system and the issue of sanctions does not apply to this case," said Esmaili.
Iran and Russia signed a contract on the S-300 defense system in 2007. However, a UN resolution banned any supply of conventional weapons to Iran, including missile systems, tanks and warships, following which Russia cancelled the S-300 shipment in September 2010.
Iran has been suing Moscow in the International Court of Arbitration for backing down on the contract, demanding 950 million U.S. dollars in compensation.
During his stay in Iran, the Russian commander will also visit Shahid Sattari Aviation University and the Mehrabad Air Base in Tehran as well as the Shahid Babaie Air Base in Iran's central city of Isfahan, according to the report.
Meeting with Commander of the Aerospace Division of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Amirali Hajizadeh is also on the agenda of Bondarev's trip to Iran.
