BAKU, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Incumbent Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Thursday sealed an overwhelming election victory, securing a third five-year term, partial results showed.
Aliyev gained almost 85 percent of the votes, leaving his main opposition challenger Jamil Hasanli in a distant second place.
"The presidential election in Azerbaijan was a triumph for democracy," Aliyev said in a televised address to the nation early Thursday.
"The fact that this vote was free and transparent is another important step toward democracy," he noted.
Aliyev thanked the people of Azerbaijan for putting their confidence in him. "I assure the people of Azerbaijan that I will further serve the people with dignity, and protect the interests of the Azerbaijani state," he said.
Aliyev also highlighted Azerbaijan's energy policy, saying it is of profound significance not only to the region, but also the entire world.
"Today Azerbaijan is playing its role in the world as a modern, independent state, and we will have more capabilities," Aliyev said.
