SDAVAO CITY, Philippines, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- A Philippine government soldier was killed and six others got wounded as a clash broke out anew between government troops and leftist rebels in southern Philippines on Wednesday, the military said on Thursday.
The latest clash occurred as soldiers were on a pursuit operation against some 60 New People's Army (NPA) rebels at Banglay village, Lagonglong, a town in Mindanao's Misamis Oriental province, according to Captain Christian Uy, spokesperson for the Philippine Army's 4th Infantry Division.
Private First Class Ellan Ramones was killed in action while six other troopers were wounded and sent to treatment at Camp Evangelista hospital in regional center Cagayan de Oro City, Uy said.
The military official believed the rebels were behind the attack late last month of a militia detachment in the same province.
A soldier and four militiamen were killed during the NPA assault at a Cafgu detachment in nearby Balingasag town on Sept. 22.
The 4,000-strong NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been fighting a leftist insurgency in 60 Philippine provinces since 1969.
