BAGHDAD, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al- Maliki and United Nations envoy Nickolay Mladenov agreed Thursday on the need for a political solution to the Syrian crisis to avoid regional consequences.
"Iraq is part of the region and affected by... the Syrian crisis. Our efforts were still being made to find a political solution to the crisis and spare the country and the region more disasters if the crisis persisted and directed toward extremism," Maliki said in a statement released by the premier's office.
For his part, Mladenov, former Bulgarian foreign minister, confirmed that the solution in Syria "must be political and there is no military solution," according to the statement.
On Aug. 2, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed Mladenov as his special representative for Iraq to replace Martin Kobler.
Maliki received in his office Mladenov on Thursday who arrived in Baghdad one day ago to head the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq.
