UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday met with Nabil Elaraby, secretary-general of the League of Arab States, both stressing the need to put an early end to the Syria crisis.
During the meeting, "they stressed the need to end the bloodshed in Syria as soon as possible, as well as to address the acute humanitarian needs there," UN spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters.
"They discussed the situation in Syria and Libya, as well as the Middle East peace process," Nesirky said.
Meanwhile, Ban "welcomed progress and reaffirmed the importance of strengthening collaboration between the United Nations and the Arab League," Nesirky added.
The Syria conflict will be one of the hot topics during the annual high-level debate at the UN General Assembly, which opens here Tuesday.
The UN chief said in late July that the conflict in Syria has claimed more than 100,000 lives since 2011, an increase from an earlier estimate of 93,000.
"The conflict is now continuing for almost two and a half years. Millions of people have either been displaced or become refugees in neighboring countries," Ban said, adding "We have to bring this to an end."
