LUANDA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Angola and Myanmar signed an accord to establish diplomatic relations between the two countries, the African country's official news agency Angop reported on Friday.

The document was signed in New York on Thursday by Angolan Ambassador to the United Nations Ismael Martins and his Myanmar's counterpart Kyaw Tin.

Ambassador Martins said Myanmar had a strong economy and an economic structure similar to that of Angola and that the Asian country was one of the major offshore oil and gas producer and had experiences in agricultural products Angola did not explore yet, including rice, which could be exploited in the relations between the two countries.

Myanmar's Ambassador Tin believed there were advantages in the cooperation with Angola as the two countries have similar objectives within the context of the world community. He said Angola is an important regional partner and very active in ensuring regional peace and stability, adding that his country would support Angola's bid for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council.

Tin stressed that Angola and Myanmar enjoyed the same kind of exports and prioritize cooperation in the domain of tourism.

Myanmar and Angola won independence respectively in 1948 and 1975.
