BANGKOK, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Seven provinces in central and northeastern Thailand have been hit by flood, while rain is expected nationwide.

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department revealed on Friday that a total of 17 districts of seven provinces have been hit by flash floods triggered by continuous heavy rain.

The affected provinces are central provinces of Phitsanulok, Ayutthaya, Angthong, and northeastern provinces of Kalasin, Surin, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department of Thailand has forecast torrential rain as likely countrywide, and the capital was hit by continuous rain overnight, causing water backup in some areas.

The weather agency said on Friday the tropical depression which came across central Vietnam, Laos to Thailand via northeastern Ubon Ratchathani province is now downgraded to a low pressure cell across the northeast, including the central provinces.

Rain is expected at central provinces of Phitsanulok, Kamphaeng Phet, Nakhon Sawan, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nakhon Nayok, Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Saraburi, Lop Buri, Ang Thong, Suphan Buri and Ayutthaya, eastern province of Prachin Buri, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat, as well as Bangkok and its vicinity.
