VIENNA, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- The poacher who claimed four lives on Tuesday was found dead in a secret room of a farmhouse near Melk early on Wednesday.
The body was found in a secret room in the cellar of the building, in which a fire had been burning for some time, according to authorities.
Identification of the body was difficult due to the fire, the authorities said, adding there was little doubt it was that of the 55-year-old suspect, now identified as Alois Huber.
The suspect barricaded himself into the farmhouse after killing three police officers and an ambulance driver, local media reported.
No other people were found in the farmhouse and police believed there was no more danger.
The authorities, involving 135 Cobra special forces, 200 executive personnel, 69 Red Cross personnel and three army tanks, began to approach the farmhouse at about 18:20 (1620 GMT) Tuesday evening. Nothing had been heard from the building since a single gunshot at about 17:30 (1530 GMT).
Minister of the Interior Johanna Mikl-Leitner, who had been closely watching the siege from an operation center, said early on Wednesday the incident was without precedent in Austria and offered condolences to the families of the victims.
