GENEVA, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) said on Tuesday that it welcomed and supported the idea to place Syrian chemical weapons under international control.
The positive reactions to the Russian proposal, in particular from the United States, are encouraging, the FDFA said in a statement.
Switzerland reiterates its call to all parties to accept their responsibility to work towards a political solution and to protect the civilian population in conformity with the provisions of international humanitarian law, it said.
"Switzerland reiterates its view on the need to spare no effort to convene a new conference in Geneva, as wished and accepted by key Syrian and international actors," read the statement.
It said that the alleged use of chemical weapons was especially alarming and establishing the facts must be a priority.
"It is important to prevent any further such violations and not to allow serious crimes to go unpunished, regardless of the alleged perpetrator," it said.
It said that Switzerland would continue to deploy its humanitarian capacities in Syria and neighboring countries.
