BEIRUT, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) spokesman said on Sunday that "should the situation in the region escalate, the implementation of UN Security Council 1701 will be halted."
"Even though, UNIFIL will not leave its area of operations in South Lebanon," the UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tenenti told Almustaqbal daily.
"UNSCR 1701 will be obstructed because its article on the halt of hostile acts would have been violated. Should this occur, then the position of the international peacekeeping force will lie in the hands of the Security Council," Tenenti was quoted as saying.
Tenenti remarked that the "UNIFIL aims at helping the Lebanese state and its people, and overseeing the cessation of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel."
Commenting on reports that the Italian government will send a ship to evacuate UNIFIL's Italian mission, Tenenti said "The Italian Embassy in Lebanon alone has an answer to this move."
"The UNIFIL has not altered its security measures and has no intention to change its rules of engagement that dictate its actions in the South," Tenenti stressed.
Italy has already dispatched the "Andrea Doria" warship to the eastern Mediterranean that could evacuate UNIFIL's 1,100-member Italian contingent if the conflict in Syria spills over into Lebanon.
