NEW DELHI, Sep. 3 (Xinhua) -- Four rape cases, three of which involving minors, were reported in the last three days in New Delhi, raising alarms that sexual assaults on women seem to be on the rise in the Indian capital.
A nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped and then brutalized by her neighbor who is also a teenager on Saturday; the accused has been arrested and sent to a reforms facility while the girl was hospitalized, a senior police official said.
Around the same time, a 42-year-old auto-rickshaw driver allegedly raped another nine-year-old girl after taking the victim to a deserted spot barely a few kms from the national capital. The accused has been arrested after the girl, who knew him, narrated the incident to another auto-rickshaw driver.
In another incident, a four-year-old girl was raped by a 19- year-old carpenter who allured her to nearby railway tracks. The alleged rape took place Sunday and the accused was arrested, the official said.
The fourth case involved a woman who was allegedly raped by two men in the slums while she was taking care of her son. Both the accused have been nabbed.
Last December, the horrific and fatal gangrape of a 23-year-old medical student shocked India and triggered massive protests in the national capital, forcing the government to introduce stricter punishment for people convicted of sexual assaults on women.
