DAMASCUS, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chief of the Iranian parliament's security and foreign policy commission arrived in Syria Saturday as the country is poised to come under a U.S. strike due to its alleged use of chemical weapons.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi, heading a parliamentary delegation, is expected to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and hold a press conference at the end of his two-day visit, sources told Xinhua.

The delegation arrived in Damascus hours after the departure of a UN investigation team after days of inspections at the site of purported chemical weapon attacks outside the Syrian capital.

The visit also came at a time when Syria is poised to come under a U.S. strike as Washington accuses Damascus of gassing its own people in the Aug. 21 attacks.

Iran, one of the main regional allies of Damascus, has said it rejects any foreign military intervention in Syria and warned of dire consequences of such an aggression.
