HERAT, Afghanistan, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- A key Taliban leader named Abdullah Akbari was killed along with seven other militants in an operation conducted by the army commandos in western Herat province overnight, an army source said Friday morning.
"Based on a tip off, the Afghan National Army (ANA) commandos carried out an operation in Seyawashan village of Guzara district. A gunfight took place following the arrival of the troops at the compound. As a result eight militants including Akbari were killed, " the army source, Naqibullah Baloch, told Xinhua.
According to the source, the killed militant was in charge of leading Taliban in all western provinces.
He said one other militant was arrested and a handful of weapons were seized in the raid, adding no member of ANA was hurt in the operation in the district in the southern part of provincial capital Herat city, 640 km west of capital Kabul.
The Afghan security forces take the leading role in all security operations across the country from U.S. and NATO-led troops since late June this year.
The Taliban insurgent group, which has been waging an insurgency since its regime was toppled by a U.S-led invasion in late 2001, has yet to make comments.
Afghan district administrative chief, three guards killed in bombing
KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- The administrative chief of the Dashti-i-Archi district in northern Afghan province of Kunduz was killed in a suicide bombing Friday morning along with three guards, the police said.
"Chief Sheikh Saddruddin wanted to attend a special prayer for a deceased relative in a mosque. As he approached the compound the bombing took place. He and three his bodyguards dead on the spot , " deputy provincial police chief Abadullah Talwar told Xinhua. Full story
Suicide car bomb kills 5, wounds 15 in Afghan southern town
LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- A suicide car bomb shocked Helmand's provincial capital Lashkar Gah, 555 km south of Kabul, on Wednesday killing five people including the attacker and injuring 15 others, spokesman for provincial government Omar Zawak said.
"The gruesome incident happened in Lashkar Gah city when a convoy of foreign troops was passing the area, leaving five people including the attacker dead and injuring 15 others, all civilians, " Zawak told Xinhua. Full story
36 Taliban militants killed in Afghan operations within day: gov't
KABUL, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Thirty-six Taliban militants were killed and 10 wounded during operations in different Afghan provinces within a day, said the country's Interior Ministry on Wednesday morning.
"Afghan National Police (ANP) conducted several joint clearance operations with the cooperation of the army, National Dirctorate of Security (NDS) and Coalition Forces in Baghlan, Laghman, Nangarhar, Kandahar, Helmand, Logar and Wardak provinces, killing 36 armed Taliban, injuring 10 and 11 others were arrested within the last 24 hours," the ministry said in a statement providing daily operational updates. Over 40 killed in Afghan violence within one day
KABUL, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Forty-three people, including one dozen civilians, have been killed in Afghan violence over the last 24 hours, the authorities said Tuesday.
Earlier on Tuesday, six civilians were found dead in eastern province of Paktia bordering Pakistan. Full story
