Iranian FM says U.S. attack on Syria "unlikely"

TEHRAN, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. attack on Syria over alleged use of chemical weapons against civilians seems "unlikely," the Iranian foreign minister was quoted as saying by official IRNA news agency on Tuesday.

"I think it is unlikely for the United States to enter another war in the (Middle East) region," Mohammad-Javad Zarif said, adding that there is no consensus among the world's countries against Syria, although the United States and the West try to represent an "unreal picture."

"Nobody has offered a document proving that the Syrian government has used the chemical weapons; on the contrary, most of the evidence shows that the chemical weapons have been used by others," said the Iranian foreign minister.

Iran has accused the Syrian armed rebels as the perpetrators of the chemical attack. However, the U.S. government has held Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's administration responsible for the incident.

In the past days, the U.S. warships in the Mediterranean Sea have moved closer to the coasts within cruise missile range of Syria.

Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi stressed Tuesday that no authorization by the UN Security Council has been issued for military intervention in Syria.
