UN Syria envoy Brahimi believes in negotiation to solve crisis

GENEVA, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Joint Special Representative of the United Nations and League of Arab States for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi believes that the only solution for Syria crisis is to sit around the negotiating table, his spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Khawla Mattar, spokeswoman of Brahimi, told a press conference that the joint envoy has been working hard with all partners to actually push forward for the Geneva II conference, a follow-up to a ministerial meeting on Syria held in Geneva last year, and "he is still confident that the Geneva II will be taking place at some point".

But she said that given the current situation, the form of events and the developments on the ground, the meeting is not going to take place in September as initially planned, and she failed to give specific time of the international conference.

Mattar said Brahimi still believes that the political solution is the only way out, having highlighted that in fact he thinks the recent escalation and the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria will prove to the whole world that more of this will create a more complex situation, will not solve the problem and will mean more sufferings for the Syrian people.

Mattar added that the joint envoy is in constant contact with America and Russia to urge the two parties to meet together.
