LA PAZ, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- At least 15 inmates were killed and some 60 others injured in a violent prison riot in the eastern Bolivian city of Santa Cruz early Friday, local media reported.
The melee began about 5 a.m. local time (0900 GMT) in two cellblocks for control of part of the overcrowded Palmasola prison, the report said.
At least 15 inmates died in the battle, Bolivian daily La Razon quoted police commander Jorge Aracena as saying.
The daily also cited Santa Cruz Ombudsman Celso Parada as saying the injured were taken to local hospitals, with many of them in serious conditions.
The Public Prosecutor's Office has began an investigation to the riot.
There are some 3,500 inmates in Palmasola prison, surpassing the prison's capacity.
