MEXICO CITY, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- A main leader of the Gulf drug cartel was caught Saturday near the U.S. border, said the Interior Ministry.
Mario Ramirez Trevino, also known as "Baldy" and "X-20", was captured in a police operation targeting him in Rio Bravo, a town bordering the U.S. state of Texas, the ministry said in a brief statement.
According to witnesses, checkpoints were seen erected outside the town while soldiers patrolled in the streets, with helicopters hovering above.
A press conference is scheduled for Sunday to detail the arrest.
Ramirez was a kingpin of the once-powerful criminal organization that controls most of the drug trafficking through the harbor city of Matamoros.
He is also charged with several U.S federal offenses including facilitating drug trafficking.
Mexican authorites hailed the capture as another major anti-drug success since President Enrique Pena Nieto took office last December, after the arrest of "Z40", Miguel Angel Trevino Morales, leader of another cartel.
