HERAT, Afghanistan, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Taliban militants attacked a road construction company in Afghan western province of Herat, 640 km west of Kabul, leaving 10 people dead Saturday, police said.
"A group of Taliban rebels attacked a camp of a road construction company in Karakh district of Herat province at around 01:30 a.m. local time today leaving 10 people including nine workers of the company and one police dead,"a senior police officer Israel Khan told Xinhua.
It was a local company involved in the road building between Herat and Badghis provinces over the past year, the official added.
Taliban militants fighting the government have speed up their activities against government interests since launching their so- called spring offensive in May this year.
Afghan clash leaves Taliban commander dead, 7 injured including 2 policemen
FAIZABAD, Afghanistan, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- One Taliban commander was killed and seven others including five Taliban fighters and two policemen sustained injuries as clash erupted in Germ district of Badakhshan province 315 km northeast of Kabul on Thursday, a police official Sayed Jahangir Karamat said.
The clash, according to the official, occurred early morning in Pul-e-Maghal area of Germ district when a group of Taliban militants attacked a police checkpoint and police returned fire killing Taliban commander Mullah Gulbudin and injuring five others. Full story
Afghan MP in Taliban custody: provincial governor
GHAZNI, Afghanistan, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- The governor of Ghazni province, Musa Khan Akbarzada, confirmed Thursday that parliamentarian Freeba Kakar of Kandahar province has been kidnapped by Taliban militants and is in the outfit's custody.
"Taliban militants kidnapped Freeba Kakar from Kandahar-Kabul highway while (she was) passing Ghazni on Sunday and efforts are underway to secure her release," Akbarzada told Xinhua. Full story
