NEW DELHI, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday expressed sadness over the loss of Indian Navy's submarine INS Sindhurakshak in an explosion Wednesday morning in Mumbai
A total of 18 soldiers are feared to have been killed in the explosion. "We are deeply pained that we lost the submarine, INS Sindurakshak in an accident yesterday. Eighteen brave sailors are feared to have lost their lives," Singh said in his speech on the 67th Independence Day here.
"The accident is all the more painful because the Navy had recently achieved two major successes in the form of its first nuclear submarine, INS Arihant and the aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant," he said.
INS Sindhurakshak was subject to two explosions midnight Wednesday before catching fire and sinking with 18 navy personnel onboard at a major navy base in downtown Mumbai.
