VALLETTA, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- A 53-year-old French tourist was drowned and a 17-year-old French girl went missing Saturday in rough seas off Gozo, the second largest island in Malta, local media reports on Sunday.
People on the scene raised the alarm at about 4:45 p.m. local time (1445 GMT) on Saturday. But rescue efforts were unsuccessful due to strong wind and high waves.
"We all kept shouting and encouraging the swimmers to keep on swimming, there was not much else we could do," a witness told the media.
A helicopter of the Army Force of Malta arrived near one hour later. Within minutes, the man was lifted from the sea but was certified dead. But rescuers lost sight of the girl.
However, hopes faded as various witnesses said they last saw the girl's body floating.
In May, five French tourists died after the small boat they were on was battered in rough seas off Gozo.
