Cuba to mark Fidel Castro's birthday with book release

HAVANA, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Cuba plans to celebrate the 87th birthday of its "historical" revolution leader Fidel Castro next Tuesday with the release of a book dedicated to him, local media said Thursday.

"Fidel Castro, a Soldier of Ideas, Technology and Media. Thematic Selection 1959-2011," written by Omar Perez Solomon, contains a selection of extracts from Castro's speeches, reports and interviews.

Castro ruled Cuba from 1959 to 2006 after a two-year guerrilla war to oust dictator Fulgencio Batista.

He handed over power to his younger brother Raul Castro in June 2006 for health reasons.
