LOS ANGELES, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and about a dozen others injured after a motorist plowed his car into a crowd of pedestrians on the popular Venice Beach boardwalk in Los Angeles Saturday.
"There was a hit-and-run and the vehicle is in custody," said Daniel Chun, spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department.
According to the authorities, the driver ditched his car in nearby Santa Monica, and fled on foot. A possible suspect had been detained.
The incident occurred at around 6 p.m. on Saturday (0100 GMT, Sunday), and the driver was described as having sandy blond hair and in his mid-20s.
According to the local police, the detained suspect fit that description, and the collision damage of the vehicle in custody was consistent with what happened at the boardwalk.
Witnesses reported that the driver seemed to be moving purposefully and in control of the car as it drove through the crowd.
The driver's motive remained unknown, said the police, adding that the suspect would face homicide charges in addition to felony hit-and-run charges.
Ten of the injured people were taken to hospitals, with two hurt seriously.
The Venice Beach boardwalk is a major tourist attraction known for its eclectic patchwork of restaurants, tattoo shops and skateboard parks.
