Qatari emir announces transfer of power to son

DOHA, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Qatar's Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani on Tuesday announced the transfer of power to his 33-year-old son, Sheikh Tamim.

The 61-year-old emir said in a televised speech broadcast on Qatar state television that the decision has been made following weeks of consideration.

Qatar has given no official explanation on the transition, but it is widely believed that Sheik Hamad is suffering from health problems as such move is rare in the region.

The outgoing monarch came to the throne 18 years ago and has led his small but energy-rich country with success.

The British-educated Sheikh Tamim has held top security and economic posts, as well as National Olympic Committee chairman.

He has two wives and six children. Muslim tradition allows men to marry up to four wives.
