BEIJING, June 24 (Xinuanet) -- Malaysia's Port Klang International Trade and Halal Industry Development Center Project, the world's largest transit hub of halal products, was launched here Monday.

The project is set to help thousands of Chinese enterprises tap overseas markets, and build a sales and exchange platform for halal foods from China and other parts of the world.

"The project will open a window for China’s halal enterprises going global," said Xia Baowen, chairman of SM International Wholesale (China) Centre Sdn Bhd, the organizer of the project.

As the world's first manufacturing base and the only distributing center of halal products, the center will push the Chinese halal businesses and give them access to cheaper international raw materials, Xia said at the launching ceremony.

Currently, the annual trade volume of global halal products stands at 2.1 trillion U.S. dollars with that of China only at 2.1 billion U.S. dollars, and the lack of halal certification services is one of the contributing factors to the situation.

The project will help Chinese halal enterprises obtain Malaysia's internationally-recognized certification and thus help increase their shares in global trade.

Chinese enterprises, via the project, will bring more vigor and vitality into the Muslim market in ASEAN, the Middle East and other Islamic countries in the world, Xia said.

The center, after coming into service, can house 550 to 700 companies and provide about 10,000 jobs, with its annual volume of goods flow reaching eight million tonnes and total output value exceeding 1.6 billion U.S. dollars, Xia added.

"The center has been greatly supported by the Malaysian government and Chinese enterprises doing business there will enjoy preferential policies in registration, taxation, customs and inspection," said Ong Chong Yi, minister counselor for economic affairs of the Embassy of Malaysia.

The center will be put into operation on a trail basis this October when special activities will be held to showcase halal products from NW China’s Ningxia, Gansu, Qinghai and other regions to help foreign customers know more about Chinese halal products.

Companies from China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, China's Hong Kong and Taiwan have shown their willingness to do business there.

Covering an area of 80,000 square meters, the center houses four blocks, an exhibition center, a products agency center, a halal industry center and a logistics center.

It is a key project of Malaysia's Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ), which provides facilities for international procurement, green development and Islamic product manufacturing and distribution.

The free trade zone, situated along the Melaka Straits, connects Islamic product manufacturers in China to the growing global halal market.

Port Klang is Malaysia's largest and the world's 12th largest port.
