YANGON, May 29 (Xinhua) -- A dusk-to-dawn curfew was imposed on Lashio, the largest town in northern Shan State of Myanmar, and security was tightened starting Tuesday night following communal riot, local dailies reported Wednesday.
The riot was triggered after a local woman who trades gasoline was burned to injuries with gasoline by a man from Kengtung township on Tuesday afternoon at about 4 p.m. local time on road in Lashio.
The man, who committed the arson, was taken into custody by the police after the incident. He was found with stimulant tablets.
However, about 1,000 angry local residents rounded up the police station to demand the handover of the culprit at about 5 p. m..
It followed that some two mosques and more than a dozen shops in Lashio were burned and destroyed by the angry residents at 7 p. m...
The authorities said the situation has been brought under control.
