WASHINGTON, May 22 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama will travel to the tornado-devastated area in the state of Oklahoma on Sunday and visit victims and communities there, the White House said on Wednesday.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said at a daily briefing that the president will travel to Oklahoma City, the state capital of Oklahoma, to "see firsthand the response to the devastating tornadoes and severe weather" that have impacted the area last Sunday and this Monday.

Carney said that Obama planned to visit the affected families and first responders.

"The president has directed his administration to provide all available resources to support the response led by the governor and her team," added Carney.

State officials confirmed on Tuesday that 24 people were killed and over 200 injured when a massive tornado blasted Moore, the southern suburbs of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area on Monday afternoon. The deadly twister came after tornadoes and powerful storms that had ripped through Oklahoma and the U.S. Midwest on Sunday and earlier on Monday.
