DPRK fires short-range missile into Sea of Japan

SEOUL, May 20 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) fired a short-range missile on Monday into the Sea of Japan, local media reported.

The DPRK launched the missile off its east coast into the sea of Japan between 11 a.m. and 12 a.m. local time on Monday.

"North Korea (DPRK) fired one KN-02 short-range missile today. South Korean military will closely monitor the North Korean (DPRK) military in case of any further launch," Yonhap News Agency said quoting Seoul military official.

The DPRK fired four short-range missiles on Saturday and Sunday into the same body of water.

South Korea's presidential office urged the DPRK to stop aggravating tensions on the Korean Peninsular after DPRK launched the fifth missile on the third day.

UN chief urges DPRK to return to negotiating table

MOSCOW, May 19 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday urged the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to return to the negotiating table with international mediators.

Ban was concerned over the DPRK's latest short-range missile launches and urged the country "to refrain from further such acts," Ban told the RIA Novosti news agency.Full story

DPRK launches 3 short-range missiles

SEOUL, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Saturday launched three short-range guided missiles into the Sea of Japan, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing South Korea's defense ministry.

It is reported that the defense ministry detected two missiles launched in the morning and the last one was in the afternoon.Full story

Obama says DPRK has no nuclear missile capability

WASHINGTON, April 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said on Tuesday that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea ( DPRK) does not have the ability to arm a ballistic missile with nuclear warhead.

In an interview with NBC, when asked if Pyongyang has "the ability to put a nuclear weapon on a ballistic missile?", Obama responded: "Based on our current intelligence assessments, we do not think that they have that capacity." Full story

S. Korea to intercept DPRK missile if it strikes territory: defense ministry

SEOUL, April 11 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's missile defense system may intercept missiles possibly launched by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) if they are to strike the South Korean territory, the defense ministry said Thursday.

"We have Patriot missiles. The missiles cannot cover all the nationwide territory, but if (the DPRK's missiles) come within the area of our coverage, we can strike down (those missiles)," Kim Min-seok, spokesman at the Ministry of National Defense, said at a press briefing. Full story
