HELSINKI, May 16 (Xinhua) -- The Finnish entertainment company Rovio, which successfully created the world's famous game of Angry Birds, will launch a 3D animated movie featured with the same characters, the company said on Thursday.

According to Rovio, the 3D film is being developed, produced and financed by the company itself.

The movie will be officially released in July 2016 by Sony Pictures Entertainment, which beat several major rival studios and won the exclusive worldwide distribution rights.

Sony "convinced us that we have found the right partners and team to help us market and distribute our first motion picture," said Rovio's CEO Mikael Hed.

Reports said that the 3D cartoon Despicable Me's producer John Cohen and Iron Man's executive producer David Maisel had signed agreements with Rovio, to respectively serve as producer and executive producer for the new film.

Rovio Entertainment was founded in 2003, with its headquarters in Espoo, Finland. The casual puzzle game Angry Birds was created by Rovio in December 2009, and became an international phenomenon within a few months of its release.

To date, the Angry Birds and Bad Piggies games have been downloaded more than 1.7 billion times across different platforms and versions around the world.

In recent years, the image of Angry Birds has expanded rapidly into entertainment, publishing, and licensing, turning into a popular global brand.
