PT Freeport underground mine in Indonesia collapses, traps scores of employees

JAKARTA, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Scores of employees are being trapped after an underground mine of U.S. giant Freeport McMorant in its Grasberg mine in Papua of Indonesia collapsed on Tuesday, statement from the firm said here.

Search and rescue operations conducted by the Emergency Respond Group and Safety Team are underway after the tunnel in the underground training area collapsed.

"At this time, we cannot confirm the number of injured or trapped individuals nor whether there have been any fatalities," the statement said.

"The rescue process is difficult and will take some time to complete. We will release further information as it becomes available," it said.

PT Freeport Indonesia has reported this incident to government authorities, including the Mine Inspector of The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

The Grasberg mine in Papua has often hit by accidents.
