LISBON, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Portugal and Turkey signed here on Monday an agreement to promote economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Portuguese Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho, visiting Turkish President Abdullah Gul said that Turkey and Portugal have entered into a new stage of the cooperative and partnership relations.
For his part Passos Coelho said that the two countries have huge potential for economic and trade cooperation, with the new agreement expected to promote trade between the medium and small sized enterprises of the two countries and create favorable conditions for the expansion of markets in Asia, Middle East and Africa by the two countries.
The Portuguese Prime Minister also said that Portugal supports Turkey's continuous efforts to seek European Union membership.
Upon the invitation of his Portuguese counterpart Anibal Cavaco Silva, Gul started a three-day official visit to Portugal on Monday with ministers of foreign affairs, economy and culture, and a large number of Turkish entrepreneurs.
Earlier in the day, Gul also met with Cavaco Silva.
