ADB to focus on development, empowerment at annual meeting

NEW DELHI, May 2 (Xinhua) -- The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will focus on the theme of "Development through Empowerment" at its 46th Annual Meeting held in the Indian capital from Thursday to Sunday, said ADB President Tahehiko Nakao on Thursday.

"The theme encompasses issues that are critical for sustaining high and inclusive growth in Developing Asia," he said.

Nakao, who was newly elected president of Manila-based development bank, said that Asia still faces many developmental challenges like poverty and growing inequality, while the continent also faces challenges like climate change, food security, gender equality and regional integration.

He said ADB's Strategy 2020 will have its emphasis on inclusive growth, environmentally sustainable growth and regional cooperation and integration to meet these challenges.

Apart form the meeting of Board of Governors of ADB, the finance ministers of Japan, China, South Korea and ASEAN countries will also meet during the ADB event.
