PRAGUE, April 29 (Xinhua) -- A building near Smetana quay in central Prague was hit by a powerful explosion at about 10:00 a.m. (0800 GMT) on Monday. More than 40 people were injured in the blast.
Prague emergency services spokeswoman Jirina Ernesova said that it still cannot be ruled out more injuries in the explosion. Police has closed nearby streets.
"We do not know if it was the gas exploded, or if the cause was something else. After discussed with the firefighters we precautionary shutdown of gas in the neighboring houses," said Prague Gas spokesman Miroslav Vranek.
The explosion is very strong and the powerful blast shattered windows in the wider area of the building, many people were slashed by glass shards. Several persons were seriously injured.
According to police spokesman Tomas Hulan, except the exploded house, the building at the intersection of the National Theater and Krocinova are most heavily damaged.
"The power of pressure waves reflected by the fact that the damaged windows are both at Krocinova street, Carolina Light and relatively remote Bartholomew Street," said Hulan.
Building of the National Academy of Sciences in the street were evacuated for the chandeliers, windows and doors were damaged by the explosion, said Academy of Sciences' spokesman Jan Martinek.
The building of the Faculty of Social Sciences, which is located next to the affected house was also evacuated. Dean of the Faculty Jakub Koncelik said that the University buildings were evacuated from 300 to 400 students.
According to firefighters there is still a possible gas explosion, said the dean.
Police, firefighters and ambulance services are in the place, they built a life-saving rescue truck. The reason for the explosion is under inverstigation.
